Costco Breakfast Sausages – Amy’s Sugarhouse Maple Chicken Sausages

Costco Amy's sausages

Hi everyone!

I hope you all are having a great summer! It has been really hot and dry here in Issaquah this summer. It seems it gets hotter every year!

We tried a new item from Costco recently. Amy’s Organic Sugarhouse Maple Chicken Sausages. We tried this as breakfast sausages. My family DID NOT like these sausages! Maybe they are used to pork breakfast sausages or Kirkland Brand bacon. We felt these were way too sweet and had a strange chicken flavor and texture. The appearance of the sausages were appealing, especially after pan frying them golden brown.

Needless to say, we won’t be buying these again, sadly I ended up throwing away more than half the packages. Have you tried these sausages? Did you like them? I am still searching for restaurant like breakfast link sausages that taste great. Please comment on your favorite Costco breakfast items!

Naan -n- Curry Issaquah Restaurant Review

naan n curry Issaquah

When Naan -n- Curry opened their second location in Issaquah, there was great excitement among Renton Naan -n- Curry fans. I got an exciting text from my from J when she found out that they opened on Gilman Street. We finally got to visit for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We arrived about 11:28 AM at the Issaquah location. There was one other family waiting to go in. Right at 11:30, the door was opened for us.

One thing to note is that this is a smallish restaurant. It is fast casual style where you order at the counter and the food is brought to you. Water, silverware, napkins, etc. are in the corner self-serve style. The son of the Renton owner and other workers were on point to take our order. The menu is listed on the wall and very limited when compared to their Renton location. My usual go to is Chicken Tikka Masala, Aloo Gobi, Garlic Naan and Daal.
Issaquah Naan -n- Curry rotates their menu so they did not have Aloo Gobi or Garlic Naan.

We ended up ordering:
Chicken Tikka Masala
Chicken Shish Kabobs
Naan
Rice
Mango Lassi
Coke
Total was about $45

Well, the food is not bad…..but, nothing like Renton where the food is piping hot and fresh. Here you can tell the food has been pre-made and reheated (they make it in Renton and bring it over). The consistency is different. I was a little disappointed, I guess it’s too much to expect the same quality as the original location. The deep, consistent, fresh, hot, delicate Pakistani flavors of the Renton Naan -n- Curry was unfortunately not to be had in Issaquah. I’ll give it another try soon to see if things change. Have you tried Naan -n- Curry is Issaquah? What did you think?

Today’s Costco Haul for $144

Costco Haul

My local Costco is in Issaquah obviously. It has a nice selection since Costco HQ is right across the street. Today’s Costco shopping haul cost exactly $144, including tax.
What did I get at Costco today?

Here’s my list of Costco items:
-Hormel pre-cooked bacon
-Cuties

-2 jars of toasted sesame seeds
-1 pack of Kirkland Brand Roasted Seaweed
-1 bag of Brioche Hamburger Buns
-1 Bag of English Muffins
-1 case of Izze Soda

We heard that the mechanical pencils were really good so I had to pick some up for my middle school son. I heard from my friend Chris that Costco carried toasted sesame seeds over a year ago. This is the first time ever I actually saw them so I picked up 2 jars. They are by the spices. I will make school lunches with the salami and Brioche hamburger buns. I used to buy the La Brea Torta buns by the bakery, but my kids told me that they are too chewy. Izzy sodas are also for school lunch.

What are your favorite items at Costco?

Our staples usually consist of:
-Aveeno Lotion 2 pack
-Kirkland Brand toilet paper
-Kirkland Brand paper towels
-Kirkland Brand small tissue boxes
-Kirkland Brand baby wipes
-Kirkland Brand Ibuprofin
-Kirkland Brand Allegra Generic Allergy Pills
-Kirkland Brand contact lense solution
-Kirkland Brand Adult gummy vitamins
-Kirkland Brand Chocolate Milk (shelf stable)
-Kirkland Brand office clear garbage bags (I use these for kitchen garbage)
-Kirkland Brand black peppercorns
-Kirkland Brand Garlic Powder
-Kirkland Brand Organic Maple Syrup
-Kirkland Signature Plastic Wrap
-Reynolds Wrap Aluminum foil rolls & sheets

I heard that #1 seller of Kirkland Brand online was Amazon not Costco! People are buying Kirkland Brand at Costco and reselling them online at Amazon Marketplace.
Kirkland Brand selling on Amazon

Evidently #1 selling Costco item on Amazon is Kirkland Brand Minoxidil – Hair Regrowth Foam (generic for Rogain). No wonder they are often sold out when my husband goes to stock up. Some people just don’t like to venture into Costco or buy a membership. To us, the membership is well worth it. I think if Costco steps up their eCommerce strategy, they can increase their online sales greatly. Little bit of online marketing can go a long way even for traditional companies like Costco.

Please comment above with your favorite Costco items!

Zushi Sushi Restaurant Review, Issaquah

Zushi Sushi Issaquah

I heard about a good Sushi restaurant in Issaquah. I drove by it a few times and thought nothing of it based on it’s location at a run down strip mall and a plain sign. I read some great reviews on Yelp so decided to try it out.

Despite the terrible exterior and location, inside is cozy and inviting with a modern looking sign. This sign should also be on the outside to entice customers in I think. We ran into some people we know who were enjoying a variety of sushi. The place had a steady stream of customers on a Friday night. We ordered a bento with chicken Katsu (no pork Katsu available) which came with Spicy Tuna Rolls, 4 assorted nigiri sushi, fried pot stickers, miso soup and a salad. The salad was fresh and not doused with too much dressing. The Miso Soup was luke warm, it should be served warm. Nigiri sushi was very good and fresh. I think they know how to cut and prepare sushi here.

We also ordered a Tempura Roll with spicy mayo and Agedashi Tofu. Agedashi Tofu was a bit plain to my taste, would not order that again. Tempura roll was good with a nice crunch, but little too big for one bite. We saw our neighboring table enjoying Ama Ebi (raw sweet shrimp) and it was served with the head part deep fried like it should. That looked very good.

Overall, I think sushi is prepared nicely here, oh and did I mention they have FRESH wasabi? That is pretty rare, especially in Issaquah. Zushi Sushi is run by Koreans (Sushi Chef Jeong worked at the W Hotel in Seattle and learn about sauces in France), and the tempura shows it. In all my life, never had that tender, airy, crispy and light tempura at a non-Japanese run Japanese restaurant. Service was friendly and attentive. If you ask for hot tea, they will bring a lovely pot of Genmai Cha (green tea with roasted grain), a nice treat. Total check including drinks came under $60 for two. The meal was enjoyable, not amazing, but a great addition to Issaquah. Try it out, Zushi Sushi is located next to Lover’s or Joker’s Pub below Fred Meyer on the way to Costco.

My Favorite Tea — Harney & Sons Earl Grey

best earl grey tea

Today is a grey and rainy day in Issaquah, a perfect day for a cup of tea.  Do you like Earl Grey tea?  My latest favorite tea is Earl Grey from Harney & Sons.  If you buy the tin, you get your tea bags in a satchel.  Harney & Sons also make Paris tea, which is a twist on Earl Grey.  If you are a tea fan, try these 2 teas.  You can get it at Amazon or Target.  Enjoy!

Costco changes Seaweed Snack Packs from Kirkland Brand to GimMe Organic

Costco kirkland seaweed pack

Roasted seaweed snacks have become very popular in recent years. ¬†You can now find them in most grocery stores, including Trader Joe’s and you no longer have to visit Asian markets to buy them. ¬†Kids bring them for snack or with lunch to school and eat them like chips.

Costco kirkland seaweed pack

I want to say prior to 2013 (when Costco started selling jumbo size packs of Kirkland Brand Seasoned and Roasted Seaweed Snacks), Costco started carrying small packs of Korean brand roasted seaweed snacks.  They sold so well that Costco researched and started selling larger packs under their private label РKirkland Brand.  This Kirkland brand seaweed packs were generous size with about 30 sheets of seaweed per pack Рa staple in our household.

Costco kirkland seaweed pack

This week, when I went to buy the seaweed snacks, I noticed that Costco changed suppliers again. ¬†This time it was organic gimMe (“gim” is Korean for seaweed, so a nice play on words) Roasted Sesame Seaweed Snacks. ¬†The package says “sesame” but it’s mostly roasted with a mix of sesame oil, no visible sesame seeds on the snacks. ¬†Organic is a nice touch, Kirkland brand also briefly had organic packs but they didn’t last long. ¬†Possible supplier issue perhaps. ¬†The biggest difference is that the pack sizes went down by more than 2/3!!! ¬†It’s just 10 sheets vs. previous 30. ¬†That’s going from 17 grams to 5 grams, .6 oz to .17 oz. ¬†Cleverly they noted .17 oz to previous net weight of 17 grams on the package. ¬†It’s such a visible difference that most people will notice the drastic reduction in the size.

Costco seaweed pack new gimme gim

Costco seaweed pack new gimme gim

As for taste and flavor, the new packs are good and kids like them. ¬†I want to say the Kirkland brand was thicker. ¬†The smaller packs are easier to pack for school, which I like. ¬†However, you will eat about 3 packs vs. the old 1 pack. ¬†The new gimMe packs are also certified Non GMO and USDA Organic certified. ¬†Certified organic by Quality Assurance International – an entity authorized by USDA. ¬†Since seaweed grows in the ocean, I’m not sure how you can add chemicals or genetically modify them…… Unless they grow seaweed in aqua-culture farms I guess. ¬†The old Kirkland Brand seaweed packs were also made with non-GMO oils, so not sure what is going on.

I wish Costco sold both kinds of roasted seaweed packs. ¬†Maybe they are having some supply issues and Kirkland Brand will be back soon. ¬† Sometimes, Costco pushes the supplier so hard they just can’t keep up with the demands from the tough Costco buyers. ¬†Trust me, they work super hard to get you the best deal possible. ¬†Good news is that they are both Products of ¬†Korea, the home of roasted seasoned seaweed (vs. plain nori) and Psy. ¬†It’s hard to know the original supplier for the Kirkland Brand, it just says “Imported by Costco WholeSale Corporation”. ¬†The new gimMe brand says “manufactured for GIMME health Foods LLC.” ¬†Another good news was that these new gimMe packs were on coupon with $3 off per pack. ¬†I picked up 2 packs and may go back for more. ¬†Original price-wise I think they are the same $7.99 each (West Coast), so basically we are getting 1/3 of the portion in organic for the same price. ¬†I got mine at my local Issaquah Costco, next to their corporate headquarters in Washington state.

What do you think of the new Costco gimMe seaweed packs? Please leave a comment via the link above near the title. Enjoy.

Mirchi Indian Restaurant Issaquah

Mirchi Indian Restaurant Issaquah

There’s a new Indian Restaurant in Issaquah — Mirchi Indian Restaurant. ¬†We had lunch there recently and it was delicious! ¬†It is located right next to Taco Time on your way to Costco. ¬†The entrance is confusing as there are many doors into the restaurant. ¬†Mainly it is frequented by Indian families, so it must be good, rigfht? ¬† Once we were settled into our booth, we ordered hot chai and 2 Samosas to start. ¬†Samosas are turn-over type of appetizer that are filled with potatoes and other veggies sauteed in light curry sauce. ¬†It was served with 2 great sauces. ¬†Then, we ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, Garlic Naan, and Vegetable Biryani. ¬†It was filling, satisfying and delicious. ¬†Tikka Masala was just as you would expect, rich and creamy. ¬†They also have Butter Chicken if you prefer that. ¬†Veggie Biryani was also delicious, lightly spicy and served with curry sauce and yogurt. ¬†I also enjoyed the red onions served with the Biryani.

Their lunch specials which comes with Naan sounded good for weekdays. ¬†I am so glad that there is a good Indian restaurant near by and we don’t always have to drive all the way to Renton for Naan ‘n’ Curry.

Update: 12/18/15

We visited Mirchi Indian Cafe again.  This time we tried the Dosa (big pancake like dough) and had the mango lassi and Tikka Masala again.  Mango Lassi is pre-made, not bad, my son finished it.

Dosa Mirchi Issaquah

Dosa Mirchi Issaquah

The husband did not like Mirchi as much as Tikka Masala on Gilman. ¬†He said the food got cold right away. ¬†I think they don’t heat the serving plates before adding food. ¬†We did not like the Dosa, too greasy for our taste. ¬†I would still return for the lunch special though. ¬†I will have it to go and heat it at home. ¬†This is still a fairly new restaurant and I’m not sure if the owners operated a restaurant before. ¬†Two times in a row, we had to wait to get seated for a long time before anyone noticed. ¬†This happened to each customer as we were seated. ¬†I do like the separate take out counter though. ¬†Not a perfect restaurant, but worth a try in Issaquah.

I hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving!

We ended up hosting this year with both sets of grandparents. ¬†This time, I ended up ordering a smoked turkey from PCC. ¬†All I had to do was heat it up a few hours before dinner. ¬†You can simply order it online on their website. ¬†PCC converted their cooking classroom to turkey pickup room. ¬†The package directions said heat for 2 hours, but actually you need to heat it for 3 hours. ¬†They offer one size to make things easy — 13 – 15 lb. turkey. ¬†IT carved easily and it was moist and juicy. ¬†I was too lazy to save the carcass to make into turkey noodle soup this time. ¬†I actually hate having left overs so I packed a plate for everyone to take home. ¬†I wanted the kitchen cleaned up and ready for fresh new food. ¬†There were a lot to be thankful this year, mostly health of all family members.

Coconut Thai Restaurant – New Thai Food in Issaquah

Coconut Thai Restaurant Front Street Issaquah
Coconut Thai Restaurant Front Street Issaquah

Coconut Thai Restaurant Front Street Issaquah

There’s a new Thai restaurant in town, Coconut Thai on Front Street, downtown Issaquah. ¬†It had great reviews so we decided to try it out last night for dinner. ¬†We arrived just before 5 PM to avoid the crowds — we did not have to wait at all. ¬†Friendly staff seated us at one of the booth seats. ¬†We ordered spring rolls right away with our Thai Iced Tea. ¬†They came out not too long after, accompanied with sweet sauce, delicious and perfect start to our meal. ¬†We were very hungry as we did a short hike on the Grand Ridge Trail earlier in the day.

Next, we ordered Pineapple Fried Rice with Chicken, Padseew with Beef (kids’ favorite), and Red Curry with soft Tofu. ¬†Pineapple Fried Rice was delicious with a unique flavor, different than other Thai recipes. ¬†Our son detected nuts in the dish, which is unusal. ¬†We asked the server if there were any nuts in the rice, and he replied “no”. ¬†However, we can see and taste big chunks of cashews in the dish. ¬†Personally I loved the cashews, but if our other son would have ate it, it would have been dangerous as he has nut allergies. ¬†So, be careful about ordering as they may think peanuts are the only dangerous nuts, in fact cashews can be just as deadly for nut allergy sufferers.

Padseew tasted good, there were some large chunks of cabbage in it as fillers, which we haven’t seen before. ¬†The flavor was good and the kids enjoyed it. ¬†Red Curry with Tofu was good, but nothing to write home about. ¬†It also had too much fillers, this time too many bamboo shoots. ¬†We also ordered Coconut Ice Cream, which came with some chopped peanuts sprinkled on top, delicious and a perfect way to end the meal. ¬†As we were paying for our check, the server brought my son a complimentary coconut cupcake to take home. ¬†That was a sweet touch. ¬†We will be back, but we will be very careful about the nuts in the dishes.

Easy and Quick Bacon

Kirkland Fully Cooked Easy Bacon

Does your family love bacon? Who doesn’t like the delicious smell of bacon. ¬†But do you hate the grease splatters and cleaning up the greasy pan afterwards? Our family have been enjoying the pre-cooked bacon from Costco. ¬†You simply line them up on a foil sheet in the toaster oven (use a cookie sheet or pan that came with the toaster oven) and toast it once or twice, depending on how crispy you want them. ¬†You can also do the same in the regular oven. ¬†Gently dab it with a paper towel and you got delicious crispy bacon in minutes with quick clean up. ¬†Just toss the foil sheet in the garbage.

Try it, Hormel Kirkland Signature Bacon from Costco.  Delicious and easy.
